After tributes, condolences and personal stories about Senator McCain, senior program director Nick Rasmussen addressed the latest monthly iteration of the Institute-convened Democracy & Human Rights Working Group.

Highlighting Senator McCain’s work to end the practice of torture, Rasmussen discussed the intersection between America’s counterterrorism strategy and our national interest in safeguarding human rights and democracy all around the world.

Rasmussen recognized the tension between America’s national security objectives and it’s dedication to human rights and democracy, but noted that America’s efforts to combat extremism can be greatly strengthened when viewed through the lens of human dignity and the international laws established to prevent human rights abuses in combat.
