Minister of National Defense, Republic of Lithuania
H.E. Arvydas Anušauskas is a Lithuanian politician and historian, who assumed his duties as Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania in December 2020, following the parliamentary election. He is a Member of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, a ruling party of the current government coalition.
Prior to his appointment as Minister of National Defense, he served as a Member of the Lithuanian Parliament (the Seimas). He was elected to the Seimas in 2008 and re-elected ever since. Over the course of his political career, Anušauskas has held a number of senior positions within the Lithuanian Parliament. He served as Chair of the Committee on National Security and Defense and was a Member of the Anticorruption Commission and the Commission for the Rights and Affairs of Participants of Resistance to Occupation Regimes and Victims of Occupation.
Anušauskas has over 30 years of academic experience. Throughout his decorated academic career, he has held multiple positions, including Associate Professor at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University from 2002 to 2008, Visiting Associate Professor at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University from 2002 to 2007. Prior to that, Anušauskas was the Head of the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania from 1997 to 2008. He also held various academic positions at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, the Vytautas Magnus University, and the Lithuanian Institute of History.
Anušauskas is an author of and contributor to a number of scientific publications and books. His work has been featured in Lithuanian, Latvian, French and German scientific publications. Anušauskas academic interests include the history of the interwar Lithuanian secret services, KGB actions in Lithuania, and Soviet repressions in Lithuania.
Anušauskas has earned many awards over his career, including the Cross of the Knight of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in 2018, the 4th Class Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana of the Republic of Estonia in 2013, and the decoration of honor “Lithuanian Diplomacy Star” by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012.
Anušauskas holds a Doctorate in Humanities from Vytautas Magnus University, and Master’s Degree in History from Vilnius University.
He is married and has one son.
