Emily Couch

Program Coordinator, Global Democracy

Emily is the Program Coordinator for the McCain Institute’s Global Democracy Program.

Since moving to Washington DC from the United Kingdom in 2019, she has worked for human rights and democracy organizations including Freedom House, PEN America, and the National Endowment for Democracy, where she has consistently focused on Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In her most recent role with Freedom House, she served as the Program Officer for the organization’s Ukraine program, contributing to the design and implementation of – as well as the business development for – projects supporting human rights defenders and civil society organizations in the country.

Emily has an extensive freelance journalism portfolio, having written for publications including Foreign PolicyIndex on Censorship, and The Moscow Times. In 2025, she contributed a chapter on censorship in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to the multiauthor volume Kremlin Media Wars (Routledge).

Emily holds double master’s degree in Eurasia Studies from University College London, and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from King’s College London.

In addition to her native English, she also speaks Russian, French, and Spanish.
