Event to observe second anniversary of Kara-Murza’s unjust jailing and oppose Kremlin human rights abuses and corruption

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT, the McCain Institute at Arizona State University will join the event, “From Beyond the Bars: The Quest for Freedom and Democracy in Russia,” observing the two-year anniversary of the Kremlin’s unjust jailing of journalist, activist, and friend and pallbearer of the late Senator McCain, Vladimir Kara-Murza.

“Kara-Murza’s return to Russia after being poisoned twice before and knowing he would be arrested is nothing short of heroic,” said McCain Institute Assistant Director for Democracy Programs Pedro Pizano. “Kara-Murza’s willingness to exchange his freedom for the freedom of his fellow countrymen and women inspires us to continue fighting for democracy in Russia and around the world. His story exemplifies, heartbreakingly, what it means to speak the truth about Russia: 25 years in a Siberian Gulag. It’s time for Kara-Murza, and other political prisoners including Paul, Evan, Ilya and Alsu to be freed now.”
