Governor Katie Hobbs has proclaimed August 25–31, 2025, as the second annual John McCain Democracy Week, recognizing Senator John McCain’s legacy on what would have been his 89th birthday on August 29, and the seventh anniversary of his death on August 25. The proclamation recognizes Senator McCain’s enduring legacy in the state of Arizona, working for the people of Arizona, and his lifetime achievements fighting for freedom, democracy, and human rights in the United States and around the globe.
“In honor of Senator John McCain’s legacy, I proclaimed August 25–31, 2025, as John McCain Democracy Week in Arizona,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “His life of service, resilience, and devotion to democracy continues to inspire us to defend freedom and uphold the values we share.”
“Senator John McCain left an indelible legacy on the state of Arizona and the nation. This year marks 30 years of normalized relations between the United States and Vietnam, a policy position Senator McCain helped champion years after his five-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi, Vietnam,” said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas. “Senator McCain’s decision not to look back in anger helped propel Vietnam into the essential economic partner it is today. The McCain Institute thanks Governor Hobbs for this proclamation, which exemplifies Senator McCain’s legacy of character-driven leadership.”
