Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (September 2, 2026) – The McCain Institute at Arizona State University’s (ASU) McCain Global Leaders Ukraine (MGLU) recently concluded a week-long workshop in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hosted in partnership with leading Bosnian civil society organization, the Post-Conflict Research Center, the workshop involved an intense agenda of professionally facilitated internal discussions, as well as meetings with local experts and site visits learn about Bosnia’s own experience of war, reconstruction, and recovery.
The MGLU fellows toured the Tunnel of Hope, constructed in 1993 to connect besieged Sarajevo with free Bosnian territory, the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the War Childhood Museum, and the Sarajevo Memorial Center. They also visited the Srebrenica-Potočari Genocide Memorial and Cemetery, where they laid flowers in honor of the over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys murdered by Bosnian Serb forces in 1995. The fellows also heard the personal stories of a survivor, as well as mothers of victims.

The people of Bosnia and Herzegovina understand all too well the harrowing reality of living through war, as well as the immense challenges presented by its aftermath,” said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas. “We are proud to have partnered with the Post-Conflict Research Center, one of Bosnia’s most respected civil society organizations, to deliver this workshop and are inspired by the determination of our fellows to draw on the insights gained from the Bosnian context as they lay the foundations for Ukraine’s own reconstruction and recovery.”
The Sarajevo workshop marks the half-way point of the inaugural McCain Global Leaders Ukraine fellowship, which honors Senator John McCain’s legacy of character-driven leadership and his strong support of a free Ukraine.
