Hiroyuki Akita is a leading commentator on international diplomacy and security affairs. He joined The Nikkei in 1987 and earned an M.A. in International Relations from Boston University. He has served as The Nikkei’s correspondent in Beijing and Washington, D.C., covering Japanese politics, diplomacy, and international security, and was a visiting research fellow at Harvard University’s U.S.-Japan Relations Program. After holding senior editorial positions, he became Editorial Writer and Commentator in the Political News Department in 2009. His expertise includes U.S.–China relations, North Korea’s nuclear issues, and global geopolitics, and he writes a regular opinion column. He also served on the editorial board of the Financial Times in London in 2016. His publications include Anryū (2008) and Ranryū (2016), and he received the Vaughn-Ueda Memorial International Journalist Prize in 2018.
