Meeting the Moment: The Next Generation of Service

National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service
April 28, 2020

1:00 P.M. ET

We invite you to join us on April 28, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. ET remotely, as we partner with the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service and Arizona State University (ASU) to host a virtual event, Meeting the Moment: The Next Generation of Service.

This event will highlight the critical role of service in our country and ways to engage the next generation in military, national, and public service. In honor of the late Senator John McCain, this event will promote the notion of service above self and develop ideas to inspire more young Americans to serve – especially during times of crisis. The coronavirus pandemic demonstrates the critical role of service in meeting our nation’s challenges. This event will bring together those who have already committed themselves to serving their communities with the next generation of leaders at ASU. This event is open to the public.

Program:

  • The event will open with introductory remarks by ASU President Michael Crow and Dr. Joe Heck, Chair of the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service. It will focus on how to build a culture of service in Arizona and across the country.
  • The first virtual chat will be moderated by retired Lieutenant General Ben Freakley, Special Advisor to ASU President Michael Crow for Leadership Initiatives, and will focus on the importance of public service and what can be done to improve how the Nation responds to crises. This discussion will include participation by Commissioner Steve Barney. There will be time for questions and answers following this session.
  • The second virtual chat will discuss how to inspire the next generation of service leaders, moderated by Dr. Jonathan Koppell, Dean of ASU’s Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions.  This discussion will include participation by Commissioner Avril Haines. There will be time for questions and answers following this session.

Our vision is that by working together, every American will be inspired and eager to serve.  Join us as we discuss our final report and our vision.
