McCain Institute Launches Fellowship for Ukrainian Leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 1, 2026) – The McCain Institute of Arizona State University (ASU) is excited to announce the McCain Global Leaders Ukraine Fellowship, a pilot fellowship for Ukrainian leaders.

Focused on post-war reconstruction, the three-month hybrid program will provide fellows with the opportunity to hone their leadership and technical skills, including communications and proposal development, as well as engage with international experts in the field of post-war reconstruction. Fellows will also have the opportunity to connect with the McCain Institute’s extensive network in the Washington, D.C. policy space.

“Senator John McCain stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine throughout his life,” said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas. “This fellowship honors that legacy — investing in the next generation of leaders committed to Ukraine’s sovereign and democratic future. Even as Russia wages its brutal, illegal war, Ukrainians are already planning to rebuild. The McCain Institute is proud to help make that happen.”

The fellowship will run July – September 2026.

Fellows will be expected to:

  • Participate in regular online leadership modules and thematic discussions throughout July, August, and September.
  • Attend a week-long workshop in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, from August 15-22.
  • Work with their cohort to develop recommendations for a democracy-centered, just, and inclusive post-war reconstruction process in Ukraine.
  • Develop action plans for how they can apply what they have learned in the fellowship to their work and within their communities.

The McCain Institute seeks fellows from the following sectors:

  • Policy
  • Veterans
  • Civil Society
  • Business
  • Environment / Ecology
  • Media
  • Culture

In service of ASU’s commitment to inclusion, the McCain Institute strongly encourages candidates based outside of the Kyiv region to apply.
