WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 26, 2026) – The McCain Institute at Arizona State University (ASU) today announced it is accepting applications for the 2026 cohort of the McCain Global Leaders (MGL) program.

Entering its fifth year, the MGL program supports character-driven leaders from around the globe who embody Senator John McCain’s legacy of serving a cause greater than oneself. Previously known as Next Generation Leaders, the McCain Institute’s leadership program has prepared individuals to lead from a place of values and ethics since 2014.

A diverse group of up to 25 leaders who are working “in the arena” to advance democracy, human rights, and freedom will be selected for the 12-month non-residential fellowship.

Applicants are selected through a competitive, open recruitment process. Though there is no age requirement, those selected are typically mid-career professionals between the ages of 25 and 45. Applicants should possess a strong record of service and experience working directly on the global theme of “Advancing Freedom, Defending Rights, Creating Opportunity” as well as experience with their respective regional theme.

“2026 marks a milestone—we’ll welcome the fifth cohort of the McCain Global Leaders program, which continues to proudly unite leaders from around the globe who are dedicated to upholding the core values that Senator John McCain fought for his entire career,” said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas. “We are eager to welcome the 2026 cohort and support them as they work to identify solutions to the toughest challenges facing democracy and human rights at home and abroad.”

The 2026 theme for the McCain Global Leaders program is Advancing Freedom, Defending Rights, Creating Opportunity. Additionally, each region has its own technical area of focus:

  • Western Hemisphere: Building Partnerships, Advancing Migration Solutions
  • Europe and Eurasia: Countering Authoritarians – Leveraging Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights
  • Africa and the Middle East: From Protest to Policy – Growing Democracy for All
  • Asia and Oceania: Creating Stability by Advancing Democracy and Freedom

“Since its launch in 2021, we have seen significant, real-world impact through the McCain Global Leaders program and have taken on some of the most challenging issues the global community faces,” said Assistant Director of Global Leadership Scott Nemeth. “The MGL program is not theoretical—we bring our leaders to hot spots around the world where democracy and human rights are under threat in an effort to learn and to devise innovative solutions that can have a positive impact now and in the future.”

Previous cohorts have visited nations on the frontlines of defending democracy and human rights including Finland, Guatemala, Kenya, Poland, South Africa, Taiwan, and more. Past McCain Global Leaders include professionals in the private sector, government, and NGOs who continue to leverage their extensive networks to develop future leaders of character and courage.

“This great program didn’t just shape my leadership skills, it stayed with me long after it ended, guiding how I could possibly show up in moments of crisis and responsibility,” said 2024 McCain Global Leader Hager Eissa. “I would encourage any upcoming leaders from all backgrounds who believe in dignity, courage, and service before self, to apply; because this experience truly changes how you lead and why.”

The program is supported by an advisory council composed of global leaders in government, foreign policy, humanitarianism, private sector, national security, entrepreneurship, and technology. See the list of McCain Global Leaders Advisory Council members HERE.

“In today’s complex global environment, character-driven leadership matters more than ever,” said McCain Global Leaders Advisory Council Member Abby Finkenauer. “The McCain Global Leaders program invests in individuals who lead with courage, service, and integrity as they advance freedom, defend human rights, and create opportunity in their communities. It is an honor to support a program that carries forward Senator John McCain’s legacy by preparing the next generation of leaders to meet the world’s toughest challenges.”

The application window will remain open until March 15, 2026. Click HERE to learn more and access the application.
