The John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative: Impact
The McCain Institute’s effort to free political prisoners and hostages began in 2022, with the wrongful imprisonment of Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian opposition politician and steadfast ally of Senator John McCain. The McCain Institute joined a global effort to elevate Vladimir’s case and call for his release, until he was ultimately freed in 2024. The McCain Institute also petitioned and advocated on behalf of the imprisoned Georgian journalist Nika Gvaramia, helping secure a presidential pardon.
The McCain Institute officially launched the John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative in February 2025. Under the leadership of Advisory Council Board Chair Vladimir Kara-Murza, the FPPI continues to fight for the freedom of victims of arbitrary detention. The FPPI has contributed to successful advocacy campaigns to release Venezuelan pro-democracy activist Jesús Armas, Belarusian musician and activist Maria Kalesnikava, and Israeli Americans held hostage in Gaza.
