Aliz Pocsuvalszki

Hungary

Aliz Pocsuvalszki is an educator and activist of partly Roma origin from Budapest; she is also a member of the 2019 mccain-ngl cohort. During her mccain-ngl program year, she was placed at City Year in New Orleans, where she played an integral role in developing and delivering diversity, equity, and inclusion training to City Year staff, volunteers and teachers. Prior to the mccain-ngl Program, Pocsuvalszki worked with different Roma communities countrywide, and volunteered with MigSzol (Migrant Solidarity Group of Hungary), a grassroots independent group of immigrants, refugees and Hungarians. Pocsuvalszki’s LAP seeks to challenge the long-standing practice of school segregation and to work towards a more inclusive system which guarantees educational access to all marginalized groups in Hungary. Since returning to Hungary in July 2019, Pocsuvalszki became a co-founder of a non-profit association which utilizes mentorship and after-school programs to combat school dropout of Roma students in Hungary. This Catalyst Grant will allow Pocusvalszki to scale her pilot student mentoring program to more schools and to integrate social-emotional learning methodologies into the after-school curriculum.
