WASHINGTON, D.C. – The McCain Institute at Arizona State University today announced it is accepting applications for the 2024 cohort of the McCain Global Leaders Program.
Now in its third year, the McCain Global Leaders Program supports character-driven leaders from around the world who embody Senator John McCain’s legacy of serving a cause greater than oneself. A diverse group of 25 leaders who are working “in the arena” to advance democracy, human rights, and freedom will be selected for the 12-month fellowship. The 2024 theme for the McCain Global Leaders program is defending democracy.
“The McCain Global Leaders program recruits outstanding character-driven leaders and provides them training and coaching to increase their impact,” said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas. “Whether it’s Guatemala’s youngest Member of Parliament, a Hong Kong activist fighting authoritarian propaganda, or a writer from Afghanistan countering violent extremism, the individuals selected for this program represent the future of democracy around the world. I look forward to seeing what the next wave of applicants has in store.”
Applicants are selected through a competitive, open recruitment process. Though there is no age requirement, those selected are typically between the ages of 25 and 40. Applicants should possess a strong record of service and experience working directly on the global theme of defending democracy.
McCain Global Leaders join the program’s alumni network after their fellowship year. Currently, 54 alumni of the 2022 and 2023 cohorts are active in the network. Past McCain Global Leaders include professionals in the private sector, government, and NGOs who continue to leverage their extensive networks to develop future leaders of character and courage. “The McCain Global Leaders Program underscores the importance of universal values among a diverse group of character-driven individuals. Rooted in the legacy of Senator John McCain, it offers a transformative experience to amplify our positive impact by providing unique professional and training experiences through the process of human connection,” said Lourdes Argueta, a 2023 McCain Global Leader from El Salvador. “As part of the 2023 Cohort, it has provided me with what I’m sure will be life-lasting connections and some of the best insights in the ‘industry’ of serving others. This program will fill you with possibility and I would recommend it to anyone who’s willing to experience humanity at its best.”
The program also boasts an advisory council made up of global leaders in government, foreign policy, humanitarianism, private sector, national security, entrepreneurship, and technology. See the list of McCain Global Leaders Advisory Council members HERE.
“My father’s legacy of defending democracy and human rights around the world is continued through the McCain Global Leaders program. We are excited to identify the next group of leaders in 2024 who will learn how to advance positive change while demonstrating a commitment to character and serving causes greater than themselves,” said James McCain, Global Advisory Council Member.
“The McCain Global Leaders program is incredibly timely and important. We face numerous humanitarian challenges and threats to democracy in every corner of the globe. This program takes emerging leaders to the frontlines of these issues and provides invaluable experiences and resources that will help today’s leaders take on tomorrow’s challenges,” said Nate Mook, Global Advisory Council Member. “I have had the experience to travel with previous McCain Global Leaders and work with them to create positive change in their home countries. 2024 will be a test for the global community, but the 2024 edition of the McCain Global Leaders program will be a strong response and provide optimism for the future.”
The application window will remain open until March 15, 2024. Click HERE to learn more and access the application.
