The John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative
Initiative
There are an estimated 1 million people around the world wrongfully detained by repressive regimes as political prisoners, including dozens of American citizens. These individuals include pro-democracy activists, human rights defenders, political opposition leaders, journalists, artists, hostages, and others who are held captive because of their commitment to the principles of democracy and individual freedom. It is imperative that the United States and its allies do everything possible to continue to shine a light on these unjust imprisonments and work tirelessly for their release.
The John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative (FPPI) of the McCain Institute at Arizona State University provides vital support to Americans and green card holders who are held overseas as political prisoners or hostages, as well as dissidents, political prisoners, and hostages from other nations who are held around the world by repressive regimes.
Inspired by Senator John McCain, a vocal and passionate advocate for those wrongfully held for fighting against tyranny, and his experience as a prisoner of war for over five years, FPPI will provide critical support to individual prisoners and their families. This includes outreach to key decision-makers at the highest level of the U.S. government, direct assistance from expert practitioners, strategic communications to galvanize ongoing support for the release of prisoners, and post-return support to help individuals reacclimate after their detainment.
McCain Institute Launches John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative
This initiative was announced at a McCain Institute event featuring Russian opposition politician, Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post opinion contributor, and former political prisoner Vladimir Kara-Murza in conversation with Director of Press Freedom Initiatives at The Washington Post Jason Rezaian. Drawing on their own experiences, both Kara-Murza and Rezaian will serve as members of FPPI’s advisory council.
