Independent Film Producer and War Correspondent
Oleksandr (Sashko) Chubko is a Ukrainian film producer, war correspondent, and researcher dedicated to documenting conflict and architecting post-war reconstruction. Since 2022, he has worked with the New York Times in Ukraine as a local producer and reporter. In this role, he contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage and received the Kurt Schork News Fixer Award from the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Prior to his work in journalism, Sashko spent over a decade in the Ukrainian film industry. His films have received awards at festivals in Cannes, Rotterdam, Locarno, and Sarajevo. A member of the European Film Academy, he produced the acclaimed drama “La Palisiada”, Ukraine’s official entry for the Oscars.
Sashko is working on a comprehensive vision for the post-war revitalization of his hometown, Slovyansk. His project focuses on transforming the historic Slovyansk salt lakes resort area into a modern recovery campus for veteran and civilian rehabilitation, pairing the region’s natural therapeutic resources with the local ceramics tradition. In parallel, he is working on a documentary feature about his hometown of Slovyansk and a collaborative local history platform designed to counter Russian propaganda by reclaiming the deep roots and authentic identity of eastern Ukraine.
Sashko is also a PhD scholar at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. His doctoral research focuses on the visual culture of media and communications, specifically analyzing the transformation of war photography.
