WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, the McCain Institute is pleased to announce that former Senator Heidi Heitkamp has joined the Institute’s Board of Trustees.
While serving in the United States Senate from North Dakota, Heitkamp emerged as one of America’s leading legislators on the issues of human trafficking, homeland security, and economic opportunity. Of particular note, Heitkamp helped write and pass bills that targeted facilitators of human trafficking, while also working to combat trafficking in Indian Country. In 2018, she introduced legislation along with Senator John McCain that expanded AMBER alerts, to provide life-saving service previously unavailable in much of Indian Country and related areas.
“Heidi Heitkamp’s energy, ethos and backbone epitomize what the Institute is all about, character-driven leadership, service before self, and taking action,” said Ambassador Kurt Volker, the Institute’s executive director.
“With human dignity at its root, the work of the McCain Institute, especially its role in combatting human trafficking, is more vital now than ever,” said Heidi Heitkamp. “I’m honored to take on this role of advancing values-based leadership, and am thrilled to be teamed up with my good friend, Cindy McCain. She and I first bonded over our work to stop human trafficking across the country and the world, and I’m thrilled to continue working with her to help address many of the real global challenges we face.”
Mrs. Cindy McCain is board chair of the McCain Institute.
“Having witnessed Heidi Heitkamp’s acumen and commitment to values-driven leadership firsthand, I am very confident about the future of the Institute with her on board,” said McCain Institute Board of Trustees member Senator Kelly Ayotte. “I was honored to work with Heidi in the United States Senate, and look forward to continuing our work together at the McCain Institute.”
